Jobs Should Come Before College
Because college without practical skills is a farce
So you’ve graduated college. Congratulations! You’re now tens of thousands of dollars in debt and about to be slapped in the face by the realization that you’re woefully ill-prepared to thrive in the wild.
This is the stark reality facing far too many college grads today. But this isn’t news — everyone knows that most college grads aren’t prepared for “real life.”
What baffles me is why we as a society let this go on. Why do we feel okay setting debt-laden, inexperienced college grads loose into the world? Are we convinced that this is the best way to prepare young people to lead productive lives? Many college students don’t even have the financial know-how to be self-sustaining, as evidence by irresponsible and risky credit card usage among university students. This is perhaps not surprising though, considering that about half of high school students are financially illiterate — and without work experience, they won’t acquire money skills between high school and college.
Most recent grads’ contributions in the work environment will be minimal until they get some real-world experience under their belts. Corporate recruiters know this. They only consider grads with no experience for the least-desirable positions, and much of the…
